Dr. Nathan Swain
Praised for his “graceful comfort and precision” and “rare ease and fluency with the instrument” by the Boston Musical Intelligencer, Nathan Swain is in high demand as an oboe performer, teacher, and repairman.
An active orchestral performer, Dr. Swain has served as 2nd oboist with the Las Vegas Philharmonic since 2010. He has also performed extensively within the greater Boston area, where he was invited by Music Director Max Hobart to serve as the principal oboist for two consecutive seasons with the Boston Civic Symphony. He has also appeared with ensembles such as the New England Philharmonic, the Portland Symphony Orchestra (ME), the Bangor Symphony Orchestra (ME), the Neponset Choral Society, The Bach Experience: Cantata Series at Marsh Chapel, and the Freisinger Chamber Orchestra, where he has been a featured soloist in a performance of the Mozart Oboe Concerto, K. 314.
Dr. Swain has enjoyed teaching privately since during his own studies with Dr. Stephen Caplan in high school at the Las Vegas Academy of Performing Arts, and many of his aspiring students have continued their music studies at the college level. In the Fall of 2013 Nathan was invited to teach the oboe studio at the University of Nevada Las Vegas as a sabbatical replacement for Dr. Stephen Caplan.
Over the years, Nathan has participated in many summer music festivals including the Brevard Music Festival, the Interlochen Arts Camp, the Aspen Music Festival, the Chautauqua Music Festival, the Tanglewood Oboe Workshop, the Domaine Forget International Music and Dance Academy, and the Elaine Douvas Masterconference. Nathan holds a Bachelor's Degree in Music Theory from New York City's Mannes College of Music, and Master's and Doctorate Degrees in oboe performance from Boston University, where he studied oboe with John Ferrillo and baroque oboe with Marc Schachman. His other principal teachers include Stephen Caplan, Anne Marie Gabriele, and Richard Dallessio.
